Energy Managment

Energy usage has been come more important in engineering design and installation with the introduction of Section J of the BCA and its requirements to comply with increasingly stringent insulation, equipment efficiencies and maintenance requirements. All of the above would have been incorporated in good design but were often omitted at the installation stage in an effort to cut costs not taking account of the increased running cost implications and the difficulties of maintenance. The introduction of minimum standards by the BCA section J has addressed this but more can be done especially if incorporated in the early stages of design. Additionally with the recent advances in technology and the internet it is possible to provide management and monitoring services at a reasonable cost which allows targeting of excessive energy consumption and/or charging out to the user eg for out of hours air conditioning usage.
